Ringfort, Clonkill, Co. Westmeath

In the fields of Clonkill, County Westmeath, a ringfort has effectively vanished, yet left enough of itself behind to be readable if you know what you are looking for.

Ringforts, which are circular enclosures typically defined by an earthen bank and ditch, were the most common form of early medieval rural settlement in Ireland, built and used roughly between 500 and 1200 AD. This one is no longer visible as a coherent monument on the ground, but its former presence is betrayed by a single curving field boundary, the kind of detail that reads as ordinary agricultural infrastructure until you understand what it is tracing.

The site was recorded clearly enough on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1837, where it appears as a circular enclosure, its shape still largely intact at that point. By the time the revised twenty-five-inch OS map was published in 1911, the monument had been removed from the record entirely, indicating that the earthworks had been levelled in the intervening decades, most likely cleared as agricultural land was improved and field systems were reorganised during the nineteenth century. What the 1911 map does preserve, without comment, is a curving field bank to the south of the site, which follows the line of the original enclosing bank. An aerial photograph taken in November 2011 using Digital Globe imagery confirmed that this curving boundary, visible from the south-west, still traces the arc of the old ringfort with reasonable clarity, even where the bank itself has long since been flattened elsewhere around the circuit.
