No bank, no ditch, no raised outline interrupts the field. The only evidence that anything was ever here comes from the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which recorded an oval enclosure measuring roughly 45 metres by 30 metres. Since then, the ground has swallowed it.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or cashels depending on whether they were built from earth or stone, were among the most common settlement forms in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead or family homestead within a circular or oval bank. Thousands were once scattered across the landscape; many survive, but many others have been lost to centuries of agriculture, drainage improvement, and land clearance. The Cuilnacappy example appears to have gone without leaving so much as a slight rise in the turf. Its oval dimensions place it within a recognisable range for such enclosures, suggesting a modest but typical example of the type. Whether it vanished gradually through repeated ploughing or was more deliberately levelled at some point is not recorded.

What remains is a kind of negative archaeology, a site defined by its own absence. The first edition OS six-inch maps, surveyed across Ireland in the nineteenth century, captured a landscape that was already changing rapidly, and they frequently recorded earthworks that would not survive the following decades. In that sense, Cuilnacappy is not unusual in its fate, only in how completely it has been erased. The map entry is now the monument.
