Ringfort, Curraghboy, Co. Westmeath

By 1971, when someone came to inspect this site on the western edge of what is now a coniferous plantation in Curraghboy, County Westmeath, the ringfort had effectively ceased to exist.

Where maps from 1837 had shown a roughly oval enclosure, defined by a bank and a possible external fosse, a later visitor found only a natural rise of rock outcrop with none of the enclosing elements still visible. Whatever earthworks had once defined this modest fortification had been levelled at some point between the early twentieth century and that inspection, leaving no trace above ground.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, were the most common form of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular or oval area bounded by one or more earthen banks with accompanying ditches. This particular example, measuring approximately 21 metres east to west and 19.5 metres north to south as recorded on the 1913 Ordnance Survey revision, was never especially large. The 1837 OS Fair Plan map shows it outlined by two concentric lines and annotated simply as a "fort", a label the cartographers applied with some frequency to such features across the country. Whether the bank was deliberately demolished for agricultural purposes or simply eroded away over generations of use on poorly drained pasture, nobody recorded the moment of its disappearance.

What remains today is visible not on the ground but from the air. Aerial photography reveals an irregular patch of scrub vegetation that the surrounding commercial forestry plantation has been laid out around, as though something in the ground deterred the planting. That gap in the tree cover is, in a quiet way, the monument now; a negative space where an early medieval enclosure once stood, preserved only in old maps and the reluctance of conifers to grow there.
