On a low rise in the gently rolling pastureland of Finnure in County Sligo, a circular earthwork survives in partial form, its surviving bank of earth and stone reaching nearly a metre in internal height and stretching almost six metres wide. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or lios depending on their construction, were the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Most were home to a single family and their livestock, defended less against armies than against opportunistic cattle raids. The one at Finnure is modest in scale, with a diameter of around 23.5 metres, but what gives it a peculiar quality is the way the quarrying has interrupted it, stripping away the bank across a wide arc from the south-south-west to the north-west and again from the east to the south-east, leaving a scarp, a clean-cut slope, where the full earthwork once stood.

What survives is enough to trace the original design with reasonable confidence. At the outer edge of the bank and the remaining scarp, the outline of a filled-in fosse, a defensive ditch, can still be followed, running at a width of around three metres. At the eastern side of the circuit, there is a gap in the bank roughly three and a half metres wide, accompanied by what may be the remnant of a causeway crossing the old fosse. This is almost certainly where the original entrance stood, the point through which people and animals passed in and out of the enclosure daily. The quarry holes that now pock the interior add an unsettling layer to the site, a place that was once deliberately shaped now reshaped again by extraction, each intervention leaving its own kind of mark on the ground.
