Ringfort, Finshoge, Co. Wexford

At Finshoge in County Wexford, there is a ringfort that exists, for all practical purposes, only on paper.

At ground level, reclaimed pasture has swallowed it entirely, leaving no visible trace of the oval enclosure that early Ordnance Survey cartographers recorded, faintly, on their 1839 six-inch map. A ringfort, or rath, was typically a circular or oval area enclosed by an earthen bank and ditch, used as a farmstead during the early medieval period; this one measures approximately 40 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, dimensions that would once have made it a moderately substantial example of the type.

The site sits at the bottom of a steep-sided valley running south to north, positioned towards the head of that valley, with a stream running roughly 20 metres to the west. That setting, low-lying and sheltered, is exactly where an early farming community might have chosen to settle, close to water and screened from wind by the valley sides. What makes the location quietly interesting is that it was not alone. Another rath lies approximately 80 metres to the north, and a further example sits around 140 metres to the east, suggesting a cluster of early medieval enclosures in this one small valley, each presumably the centre of a separate farmholding at some point in the first millennium or early second millennium AD. Whether the three were contemporary with one another is impossible to say from surface evidence, particularly when one of them has left no surface evidence at all.
