Ringfort, Kilcurrivard, Co. Galway

On a gentle rise in the grassland of Kilcurrivard in County Galway sits a ringfort whose two encircling banks and the ditch between them have survived in notably good condition.

Most Irish ringforts, of which thousands once dotted the countryside, have been reduced over centuries of farming to faint shadows in the soil, detectable only from the air or by careful fieldwork. This one holds its shape, offering a rare chance to read the original form of an early medieval homestead more or less as it was designed.

The site is a rath, the term used for a ringfort built primarily from earthen banks rather than stone. Its outer diameter runs to approximately 59 metres, placing it at the larger end of the scale for this type of enclosure, which was typically the defended farmstead of a single family or small kin group during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Two concentric banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them provided both a physical barrier and a clear statement of status; a double-banked enclosure of this size would have belonged to a household of some standing within the local community. A trackway crosses the monument at roughly the north-north-east and east, suggesting the site remained a point of movement through the landscape long after its original use had ceased. Within the south-east quadrant of the interior there is also a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage of the kind commonly associated with Irish ringforts, most likely used for storage or as a place of refuge.
