Ringfort, Kilgarriff, Co. Galway

In a field of low-lying grassland in north County Galway, a circular stone enclosure sits quietly embedded in the landscape, its ancient walls partly absorbed by a more recent field boundary.

What makes it worth a second look is what that layering reveals: centuries of land use folded into a single stretch of drystone, where early medieval construction and post-medieval farming have effectively merged into one continuous structure.

The site is a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by a stone rather than an earthen enclosure wall, and this one measures roughly 28 metres in diameter. Cashels are generally associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, broadly the fifth to twelfth centuries, and functioned as enclosed farmsteads or small defended settlements. Here, the original drystone wall has been overlain by a later field wall along the northern arc, from the north-west through to the north-east, which suggests the enclosure continued to serve a practical purpose long after its original inhabitants were gone. A gap on the south-east side may be an original entrance, a detail that matters because it hints at how the space was once organised and approached. Inside, in the south-south-east sector of the interior, a collapsed rectangular structure survives. It measures around 18 metres long and just over 3 metres wide, oriented north-east to south-west, and is likely the remains of a house. The dimensions are modest but legible, and the collapse pattern is typical of dry-laid stone construction gradually surrendering to gravity and weather over many generations.
