Ringfort, Kilmaglish, Co. Westmeath

A ringfort that never made it onto a map is already an unusual thing.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch series, produced across the nineteenth century, was meticulous enough to record field boundaries, bog tracks, and ruins of all kinds across the Irish countryside, so the absence of this oval enclosure at Kilmaglish from every edition of those maps suggests it had already faded so thoroughly into the land that surveyors simply walked past it. It took aerial photography, specifically a Digital Globe image from November 2011, to make its outline legible again.

Ringforts, roughly circular or oval enclosures defined by earthen banks and ditches, were the typical farmstead of early medieval Ireland, occupied broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one sits at the southern end of a low ridge in County Westmeath, overlooking what was once Ballynagall Lough, a lake drained at some point and now lying as low ground roughly fifty metres to the south-west. The enclosure is oval in plan, approximately thirty metres across on its north-west to south-east axis, and defined by a bank that has been worn down to little more than a scarp, a low slope or edge in the earth rather than a visible wall or mound. The interior is uneven, with a shallow hollow in the northern quadrant that may reflect quarrying activity after 1700, the kind of opportunistic extraction of stone or material that gradually dismantled countless earthworks across the country. No entrance feature survives. Two hundred metres to the north-west, Kilmaglish graveyard and the remains of a chapel occupy the same quiet corner of the townland, and the field immediately to the north still carries the faint corrugations of old cultivation ridges running roughly north to south, the ghosts of a worked landscape that once surrounded this enclosure on most sides.
