Ringfort, Lecarrowmactully, Co. Galway

A low rise in a stretch of Galway grassland that regularly floods is an odd place to build a home, yet that is precisely where someone chose to settle, most likely during the early medieval period.

The ringfort at Lecarrowmactully sits on that elevated ground, its circular form still legible after more than a thousand years, defined by two concentric earthen banks with a fosse, the rock-cut or dug ditch between them, separating one from the other. At roughly 30.5 metres in diameter, it is a substantial example of the type, and what gives it particular interest is the care taken with its inner bank, the face of which is revetted with stone, meaning the earth was held in place with a dry-stone facing rather than left to erode freely. That is a detail that speaks to deliberate construction rather than casual heaping of soil.

Ringforts are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country, yet each one carries the trace of a specific household or small farming community that once organised its life within the enclosure. The two-bank arrangement here, sometimes called a bivallate ringfort, would have offered an additional degree of defence or status signalling over a single-banked example. The north side of the enclosure has a gap roughly 3.7 metres wide, which may represent the original entrance through which people, livestock, and carts once passed. On the north-eastern to eastern arc, the outer bank and fosse have been worn away entirely, leaving only the inner circuit intact on that side. The rise the fort occupies would have kept it clear of the worst seasonal flooding in the surrounding fields, making it a sensible, if modest, vantage point in a low-lying landscape.
