That absence is, in its own way, the point. A ringfort once stood here, and the story of its disappearance can be traced with unusual precision through the difference between two maps.

Ringforts are the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, circular enclosures typically bounded by an earthen bank and ditch, used as farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly between 500 and 1000 AD. When the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map was produced in the nineteenth century, this one was recorded as a complete circular enclosure with a diameter of around 30 metres. By the time the third edition was published in 1930, the picture had changed considerably: the enclosure now appeared as only a semicircle, some 35 metres across, with the western half apparently levelled. The slight increase in recorded diameter between editions may reflect a more careful measurement rather than any growth, but the halving of the visible structure speaks clearly enough. Someone, at some point between those two surveys, removed a substantial portion of an earthwork that had survived for the better part of a thousand years. Today, no visible surface trace survives at all.

What makes this particular site quietly compelling is not what it was but what it documents: the incremental, undramatic process by which early medieval landscapes are erased. The plough, field improvement, and the slow flattening of inconvenient bumps in agricultural land have removed countless ringforts across Ireland, but few leave behind such a tidy cartographic record of their own disappearance, caught in the interval between one survey and the next.
