Ringfort, Newcastle, Co. Galway

Between early medieval settlement and slow collapse, a cashel near Newcastle in County Galway has been quietly disappearing into the landscape for centuries.

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks, typically enclosing a farmstead or small settlement during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one, roughly twenty-five metres in diameter, now survives only as a broken ring of drystone walling, and even that boundary has been partly absorbed by a more recent field wall built directly on top of it to the west.

What remains is enough to read the original intention. The circular enclosure, though largely collapsed, still traces its perimeter across rough grazing and scrubland, with a possible entrance gap visible on the eastern side. Inside, the ground holds the faint outline of a D-shaped stone structure, likely the footprint of a small hut where someone once lived or sheltered. The site looks eastward over Lough Corrib, one of the largest lakes in Ireland, which suggests its occupants chose the position deliberately, whether for the view across the water, the ability to watch approaching boats, or simply because the elevated scrubland offered firm, dry ground. The cashel is recorded in Paul Gosling's Archaeological Inventory of County Galway, published in 1993, which catalogued sites across the west of the county.

The setting does much of the interpretive work here. The rough grazing that surrounds the site has probably helped preserve even these modest remains by keeping heavy machinery and intensive agriculture at bay. The collapsed wall and the modern field wall layered on top of it are themselves a kind of unintentional record, showing how later farmers found it easier to reuse old stone boundaries than to clear them away entirely.
