Ringfort (Rath), Addergoole Beg, Co. Galway

A ringfort that no longer exists above ground is, in its own way, a more interesting object than one you can walk around.

On a ridge in grassland above a small stream in Addergoole Beg, County Galway, there is nothing left to see, and yet the place has a documented history that stretches back through local memory and cartographic record to at least the mid-nineteenth century.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, are roughly circular enclosures defined by earthen banks and ditches, built mostly during the early medieval period as farmsteads or defended homesteads. The example at Addergoole Beg was recorded on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a circular enclosure approximately thirty metres in diameter. By 1914, a researcher named Neary had noted it in print as a circular earthen fort, and recorded that local people knew it as Addergoole-Beg Fort, suggesting it was still a recognised feature of the landscape at that point, at least by name. At some time after that, it disappeared from the surface entirely, levelled by agricultural work or gradual erosion, leaving no visible trace.

What remains is the outline of a place that was once significant enough to be mapped, named, and written down, even if the ground itself no longer shows it. The ridge it occupied still overlooks the same stream to the south, and the topography that made the site worth choosing in the first place has not changed.
