What survives of this rath, a type of enclosed farmstead typically dating to the early medieval period in Ireland, is just a partial arc of its original defences: two banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them, traceable only from the north around through the east to the south-south-west. The rest has left no visible mark on the surface at all.

At roughly 45 metres in diameter, this would not have been a particularly large example of its type, but its double-bank arrangement suggests it was considered worth defending, or at least demarcating clearly, by whoever built and occupied it. Raths of this kind were typically the enclosed homesteads of farming families during the early medieval period, their earthen banks serving as much to contain livestock and signal status as to provide any serious military protection. The site sits within what was formerly the demesne of Aghrane or Castlekelly, meaning the land was later absorbed into one of the managed estate landscapes that reshaped much of rural Galway in the post-medieval centuries, which may account for some of the damage to the monument. Adding a further layer of interest, a ring-barrow, a low circular mound typically associated with prehistoric burial, lies approximately 130 metres to the west, suggesting this particular patch of north Galway was considered a significant place across more than one period of prehistory and early history.
