The enclosure measures somewhere between twenty and twenty-five metres in diameter, which places it within the typical range for a rath, the most common form of early medieval ringfort in Ireland. A rath is essentially a defended farmstead, its interior platform raised and ringed by one or more earthen or stone banks, and this one retains a stony bank that still stands to an external height of around 1.4 metres on its north-western arc.

What makes the site quietly complicated is the layering of different periods of human activity around it. A modern field boundary curves around the north-eastern edge in a way that may not be coincidental; it could be following the line of a much older fosse, the term for the external ditch that typically accompanied such banks. On the south-western and western sides, a ditch or gully roughly 1.8 metres wide and a metre deep swings away from the bank and extends for about ten metres to the north-west, though this feature is thought to be relatively modern rather than part of the original construction. The relationship between the ancient enclosure and these later interventions is difficult to unpick precisely because the whole site is so thickly overgrown that detailed inspection on the ground is not really possible.
