The rath at Annacrivey in County Wicklow is quieter than that. Settled into a gentle east-north-east-facing slope, it measures roughly 19 metres east to west and 17.5 metres north to south, and it has left no trace of an entrance and no fosse, the encircling ditch that normally accompanies this kind of earthwork. What defines it instead is a scarped edge to the west, where the ground drops about a metre, and a low bank of earth and stone running around the north, east, and south sides, its outer face intermittently reinforced with small boulders in a technique known as revetment.

Ringforts, or raths, are the most common monument type in the Irish landscape, with tens of thousands recorded across the island. They are generally understood as enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, built to protect a household and its livestock. The Annacrivey example is modest even by the standards of the type. Its bank varies from around three to four metres wide and reaches no more than a metre in height at its tallest point on the eastern arc. The interior, as far as can be determined, is entirely empty of surviving features. That absence is itself worth noting. Many ringforts preserve the stumps of souterrains, underground stone-lined passages that served for storage or refuge, or at least the faint impressions of former structures. Here, nothing of that kind has been recorded, which may reflect the particular history of the site, or simply the effects of centuries of agricultural use on a sloping field.
