Ringfort (Rath), Archerstown, Co. Westmeath

What makes this particular site quietly odd is not the ringfort itself but the fact that a later field boundary has grown into it, borrowing the ancient perimeter as a convenient wall.

The result is a monument that has been partially absorbed by the working landscape of the post-1837 countryside, so that the modern and the early medieval now share the same earthen line along the western and south-western edges.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, typically circular or near-circular enclosures formed by an earthen bank and sometimes a ditch, used as defended farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. This example in Archerstown sits on gently rolling, well-drained grassland in County Westmeath, raised in an oval form measuring approximately 33 metres north to south and 28 metres east to west. Its enclosing bank is very poorly preserved, which alone might not set it apart from dozens of similar sites, but the interior holds more detail than the exterior suggests. A second earthen bank runs roughly north-west to south-east across the inside of the enclosure, bisecting it in a way that is not typical of the standard ringfort plan. Within the north-eastern quadrant are the remains of a hut site, with a second hut site recorded just to the north-east of it. Two further ringforts lie within 400 metres, one 375 metres to the south-east and another 330 metres to the south, which points to a landscape that was once considerably more densely settled than the quiet grassland now suggests. The river forming the boundary with the neighbouring townland of Sheepstown runs just 75 metres to the south, close enough to have been a practical resource for whoever lived here.
