Ringfort (Rath), Baile Mór Thiar, Co. Kerry

A modern field boundary runs directly towards this early medieval ringfort on the slopes above Ventry Harbour, then simply stops.

The fence breaks, steps around the monument, and resumes on the other side, a small act of deference that quietly signals something unusual is present. The rath sits on a south-facing slope, its entrance gap oriented southward towards the harbour, and the asymmetry of its defences is one of the things that makes it worth paying attention to: the external fosse, a defensive ditch dug around the outside of the enclosing bank, runs only around the western half of the enclosure, as does a low outer bank beyond it. Whether this reflects the original design or later loss on the eastern side is unclear, and dense vegetation may be concealing further traces.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when earthen, were the farmstead enclosures of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one has an internal diameter of 27 metres and an enclosing bank that rises a modest 1.5 metres on the inside but a considerably more imposing 3.2 metres when measured from the bottom of the fosse on the exterior. Fragmentary traces of drystone facing survive along the inner flank of the bank. At the centre of the enclosure stand the collapsed remains of a clochaun, a small dry-stone corbelled hut of a type associated with early Christian and early medieval settlement in the west of Ireland. The structure is 4.7 metres in diameter and its walls have largely fallen to a low spread of rubble, though the probable entrance at the south-west can still be made out. A low platform of uncertain origin abuts the bank at the same south-western point. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, a landmark piece of fieldwork for the Corca Dhuibhne region.
