One side of it has been almost entirely absorbed into the modern agricultural landscape, its bank levelled and replaced by a straight field wall, yet elsewhere the earthworks hold their shape with unusual clarity, densely overgrown and largely intact.

This is a bivallate rath, meaning it was enclosed not by one but by two concentric banks with a ditch, known as a fosse, running between them. That double-bank arrangement signals a degree of status or defensive ambition beyond the most common single-bank examples. The inner bank here still rises up to 1.5 metres above the interior floor and up to 2.5 metres above the base of the fosse, which in the south-west sector remains roughly 2 to 3 metres deep. The outer bank, while lower at around a metre externally, retains its width at the base. Intermittent traces of drystone facing survive on the inner flanks of both banks, suggesting the earthworks were once revetted in stone. The interior is crossed by a series of cultivation ridges, evidence that the enclosed space was worked as farmland at some point after the rath ceased to function as a settlement enclosure. A small river runs about 50 metres to the south-west, draining towards the same estuary the rath overlooks. There are three known ringforts in the townland of Baile na Leacan, and the writer Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, known by his pen name An Seabhac, noted in 1939 the existence of a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage typically used for storage or refuge, somewhere among them. Which of the three contains it remains unresolved.
