Ringfort (Rath), Baile Ristín, Co. Kerry

Beneath the dense overgrowth at Baile Ristín on the Dingle Peninsula lies a site that refuses to be categorised neatly.

Known as Lios Clochán na Lobhar, it was recorded in the Ordnance Survey Name Books as a circular earthwork roughly 20 metres across and 1.5 metres high, composed of earth and stone. That description sounds straightforward enough. But closer examination reveals something more ambiguous: the mound may contain the remains of one or two clocháns, the small dry-stone beehive huts associated with early Christian monasticism and hermitage on the Dingle Peninsula, or it may preserve the collapsed debris of a ringfort, the circular enclosed farmstead that was the standard unit of early medieval rural settlement in Ireland. It may, in fact, be both things at once, or neither in any complete sense.

The site was surveyed in detail by J. Cuppage as part of the Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey published in 1986. At the north-western end of the mound, a roughly circular area measuring 7.4 metres by 6.6 metres is enclosed by walling that still stands up to 2 metres high on its outer face, though the walls are heavily defaced and partly collapsed. A gap in the south-east acts as an entrance and leads toward a second possible hut structure, itself a mound of stone and earth around 1 to 1.5 metres high, with a central depression of approximately 4 metres by 3 metres. Cuppage suggested the two features may originally have been a pair of conjoined clocháns, though he also acknowledged that some of the accumulated material could represent the spread debris of a ringfort that was dismantled or simply fell apart over centuries. The name Lios Clochán na Lobhar adds another layer of uncertainty; lios is the Irish word for a ringfort enclosure, clochán refers to those dry-stone huts, and lobhar can mean leper or poor person, suggesting a possible association with a leper settlement, though the name alone cannot confirm that history.
