Ringfort (Rath), Ballindrehid, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Ballindrehid in County Mayo, an early medieval earthwork has been quietly swallowed by its own vegetation.

The interior of this rath, a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank, is now entirely engulfed in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn, making it impossible to enter and difficult even to read as a coherent structure. Hawthorn and blackthorn ring the outer bank as well, so that what was once a managed, inhabited space has become, in effect, a sealed green mass on a Mayo ridge.

Raths were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead and its associated buildings within a circular earthen bank and sometimes a ditch. This one sits on top of a ridge in Ballindrehid, with a gentle fall of ground to the north-west that would have provided clear sightlines across the landscape in a south-west to north-east arc, a consideration that mattered when choosing where to build. The bank itself measures roughly 1.9 metres wide and stands about 0.85 metres high on both its interior and exterior faces at the east, making it a modest but still legible earthwork. Its form has been altered over time, the bank modified and absorbed into a later system of field walls, one of which now cuts across the interior on a north-west to south-east axis. The enclosure spans between 23 and 25 metres in diameter. What makes its situation in this landscape particularly interesting is that it does not sit in isolation: a possible second rath lies approximately 125 metres to the south-west, and a confirmed rath sits just 80 metres to the north-east, suggesting this part of the ridge once supported a cluster of enclosed settlements rather than a single farmstead.
