Ringfort (Rath), Ballingarrane, Co. Limerick

There is a particular category of historic site that rewards the curious precisely because there is nothing left to see.

The ringfort at Ballingarrane, County Limerick, belongs firmly in that category. A rath, to use the Irish term, is a circular earthen enclosure, typically defined by one or more raised banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period as a farmstead or place of status. Thousands survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation. This one does not survive at all.

The evidence for its existence comes from the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which recorded it as an embanked circular enclosure of roughly twenty metres in diameter, sitting atop the southern end of a low limestone ridge in pasture land. When Denis Power compiled his record of the site, uploaded in August 2011, he noted that the monument had been levelled entirely, with no trace visible on inspection. The field boundaries that once flanked it to the east and west, also shown on the 1923 map, had likewise been removed, leaving the landscape with no obvious sign that anything of note had ever occupied this modest rise in the ground.

For anyone inclined to visit, the site sits on private farmland and the terrain is unremarkable pasture. The limestone ridge that gave the monument its position is still there, of course, though without the earthwork to orientate you, it reads simply as a gentle undulation in a field. What makes the effort worthwhile, if effort is made at all, is less the place itself and more the exercise of reading the older map against the present ground. The 1923 OS six-inch series is freely available through the historical mapping layers on the Ordnance Survey Ireland website, and comparing that record with a modern satellite view makes the erasure of both the ringfort and its surrounding boundaries quietly visible in its own way. Sometimes the absence of a thing tells you as much as its presence would.
