Ringfort (Rath), Balliniska, Co. Limerick

There is a particular category of historical site that is, by definition, almost impossible to visit: the one that no longer exists.

At Balliniska in County Limerick, the official record notes a ringfort, and the record is essentially an obituary. When surveyor Denis Power inspected the site, he found nothing at all.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape, a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, typically built during the early medieval period as a farmstead or high-status dwelling. They number in the tens of thousands across Ireland, and their survival rate, while imperfect, is generally reasonable. The Balliniska example appeared on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a penannular embanked enclosure, meaning the bank formed an almost complete circle with a deliberate break or entrance gap, running to approximately fifty metres in diameter. That map entry is now the most substantial thing remaining of it. By the time Power compiled his record, uploaded in August 2011, the monument had been levelled entirely, with no trace visible on the ground.

For anyone curious enough to visit Balliniska, there is an honest kind of interest in standing where a site used to be, though it requires a tolerance for anticlimactic fieldwork. The area is agricultural land, and the levelling of the ringfort almost certainly reflects the pressures of modern farming, where earthen banks become obstacles to machinery and drainage schemes. What you will find is ordinary County Limerick countryside, and the only evidence that anything was ever here is cartographic. The 1924 OS map, available through the Irish Historic Maps viewer online, shows the penannular outline clearly enough, which makes the contrast with the present-day landscape all the more pointed. The site serves as a reminder that the Irish archaeological record, for all its density, is not static, and that absence itself can be a kind of document.
