Ringfort (Rath), Ballinlig, Co. Sligo

A low, circular rise in a pasture field is easy to walk past without a second glance, which is precisely what makes this rath in Ballinlig, County Sligo, a quietly interesting thing to pause over.

Raths, also called ringforts, are enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century, and Ireland has tens of thousands of them. Most are recognised by an earthen bank and a surrounding ditch, called a fosse. This one has neither a fosse nor any identifiable original entrance, just a gently raised circular platform, nineteen metres in diameter, defined by a low scarp ranging from half a metre to just over a metre in height. It sits on the south-eastern side of a slight rise in undulating pasture, unassuming to the point of near-invisibility.

What makes it a little more legible as history, rather than just topography, is evidence of what happened to it over the centuries after it ceased to function as a farmstead. Along its northern and eastern to east-south-eastern arc, the perimeter was absorbed into field boundaries, the kind of pragmatic reuse that was extremely common when agricultural land was being reorganised and divided. Those field boundaries have since been removed, leaving the ringfort in a kind of partial restoration by default, its outline no longer obscured by later hedgerows or walls, though its original form remains incomplete and its entrance lost entirely. The absence of a fosse may mean it was never dug here, or simply that any depression has long since been filled and levelled by centuries of farming activity.
