Ringfort (Rath), Ballintubbrid, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the damp, rolling pasture of County Limerick, a low earthen rim rising barely two-thirds of a metre above the surrounding ground is all that separates an ancient enclosed settlement from the ordinary farmland around it.

The subtlety is the point. This ringfort at Ballintubbrid is the kind of site that rewards a careful eye rather than dramatic scenery, its outline only becoming clear once you understand what you are looking at.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is an early medieval farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and they survive in their thousands across Ireland, though most go unnoticed by casual observers. This particular example is sub-circular in plan, with a diameter of approximately twenty-five metres. Its defining feature is a scarped edge, meaning the ground has been cut away to create a modest but deliberate step, here standing around 0.65 metres high and roughly the same in width. That modest earthwork is enough to have preserved the interior at a level plane while the surrounding pasture continues its gentle undulation. A field boundary now runs along the base of the scarp, effectively enclosing the entire site within a modern agricultural division, which may have contributed to the survival of the feature even as farming intensified around it. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2011.

The interior is densely overgrown with bushes, which means the site reads more clearly from the outside than from within. The scarped edge is best traced by walking the perimeter slowly and watching for the subtle drop underfoot. The surrounding pasture tends toward the damp side, so appropriate footwear is worth thinking about. There is no formal access or signage, and the site sits within working farmland, so any visit would depend on the goodwill of the landowner. For anyone with an interest in the quieter end of Irish archaeology, the satisfaction here lies precisely in recognising the traces of an enclosed settlement that centuries of agriculture have not quite managed to erase.
