Ringfort (Rath), Ballybaun, Co. Galway

What makes this particular enclosure in Ballybaun quietly arresting is not its scale or drama but a single stone object sitting in the interior: a bullaun.

These are boulders or stones bearing one or more cup-shaped depressions, hollowed out either by human hand or by natural weathering, and they appear across Ireland in association with early ecclesiastical sites, holy wells, and prehistoric enclosures alike. Their precise purpose is still debated, though folklore tends to assign them healing or cursing properties depending on which tradition you consult. Finding one inside a ringfort is not unheard of, but it is the kind of detail that shifts a grassy earthwork from a routine field feature into something with a more layered past.

The rath itself sits on a west-facing slope in open grassland, roughly circular and about 33 metres in diameter. It is defined by two banks with a fosse, the ditch between them, running between them, a typical arrangement for the class of enclosed farmstead that was common across Ireland from the early medieval period onwards. The enclosing elements survive in fair condition overall, though the northeastern through to southeastern arc has been considerably disturbed. A stone-lined causewayed entrance gap, about 2.4 metres wide, survives on the eastern side, which is a reasonably standard orientation for such structures. Less standard is the fact that field walls have been driven through the monument at both the southeast and southwest, a reminder that agricultural convenience has not always been respectful of what lay beneath the sod. The bullaun lies in the northeastern quadrant of the interior, an unassuming lump of stone that would be easy to overlook without knowing to look for it.
