Ringfort (Rath), Ballyduff More, Co. Clare

On a south-facing slope near the summit of a prominent hill in County Clare, there is almost nothing left to see, and yet what remains tells a quietly absorbing story.

What was once a substantial ringfort, the kind of circular earthwork enclosure built throughout early medieval Ireland as a defended farmstead, has been reduced to a shallow platform in the pasture. The enclosure measures roughly 25 metres across, defined now by little more than an earthen scarp less than a metre high, with a flattened berm, a low shelf of ground running around the outside edge, bringing the total diameter to about 40 metres. The land has been cleared and drained, the banks almost entirely levelled, and the whole thing sits so inconspicuously in the improved pasture that a visitor who did not know to look would almost certainly walk past it.

The fort appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840, marked with the hachure lines surveyors used to indicate earthworks, and it reappears on the 1919 revision, this time labelled directly as Ballyduff Fort. That named survival on the later map suggests the site retained a degree of local recognition well into the twentieth century, a recognition that persists in a different form today: people in the area still remember it as a large fort. That oral memory is not insignificant. Ringforts number in the tens of thousands across Ireland, and many have vanished entirely from the landscape through agricultural improvement, but local tradition has a way of preserving the outline of something even after the ground has been smoothed over. The prominent hilltop position, commanding wide views across cleared fertile pasture, is itself characteristic of the better-sited examples of the form, where visibility and defensibility were clearly part of the calculation.
