Ringfort (Rath), Ballygowloge, Co. Kerry

Some places earn their entry in the historical record precisely because they no longer exist.

At Ballygowloge in County Kerry, a ringfort, or rath, once occupied the ground as a circular earthen enclosure. A rath is a type of early medieval farmstead, typically defined by one or more banks and ditches forming a ring around a central living area, and tens of thousands once dotted the Irish countryside. This one is gone entirely, replaced by a quarry that has taken its place so completely that nothing of the original monument survives above ground.
