In the townland of Ballylongane in north County Kerry, a circular enclosure, the kind of earthwork typically known as a rath, was recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1842, sitting to the north-west of a neighbouring rath that still carries an archaeological reference number today. By the time the same landscape was mapped again in 1916, the enclosure had disappeared from the record entirely, and no surface trace has been found since. It is, in the most literal sense, a site of nothing.

Raths were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, generally consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and used as farmsteads by families of modest means. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but a significant number have been lost to agriculture, development, and simple neglect over the centuries. The Ballylongane example seems to belong to this latter category. Its appearance on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map suggests it was still visible, at least in outline, at the time of the first systematic mapping of the Irish landscape. The seventy-odd years between that survey and the 1916 edition were enough for it to be levelled, ploughed out, or otherwise erased. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, catalogued it among the region's recorded monuments, placing it in relation to the surviving rath nearby, which at least gives the vanished enclosure a fixed point of reference in the landscape, even if the enclosure itself cannot be found.
