Ringfort (Rath), Ballymackesy, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly disorienting about a ringfort that has outlasted the house beside it.

In a field of level pasture at Ballymackesy in County Limerick, an early medieval enclosure sits in reasonable shape while, just to its south-south-west, a deserted house and its garden have fallen into abandonment. The fort has been here for perhaps a thousand years longer than that house ever was, and it shows no particular sign of going anywhere.

A ringfort, or rath, is the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland, typically a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead by a family of some local standing. The example at Ballymackesy is sub-circular rather than perfectly round, measuring roughly 22.6 metres north to south and 26.3 metres east to west. Its defining feature is a scarped edge, meaning the interior ground has been cut and shaped to create a drop, here standing around 0.85 metres high and about 1.4 metres wide. Beyond that edge, on the north-east to west arc, runs an external fosse, the ditch that would originally have added another layer of enclosure and deterrence; it survives to a depth of 0.45 metres and a width of 2.6 metres. These are modest but legible figures, enough to read the original intention clearly. The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with notes uploaded in August 2011.

The fort sits close enough to a public road that the road itself skirts the outer edge of the fosse on the west to north-west side, which makes the monument easier to locate than many comparable sites tucked deep into farmland. The interior is level and dry, though overgrown, so picking out the detail of the scarped edge from inside requires some patience and a willingness to peer through vegetation. The fosse is better appreciated from outside, walking the arc where the ground dips away from the bank. The deserted house and garden to the south-south-west add a peculiar layering to the visit, two different kinds of abandonment occupying the same corner of a Limerick field.
