At Ballymakeery in County Limerick, what was once recorded as a rath, a type of circular earthen enclosure used as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period, has been so thoroughly levelled that when the site was formally inspected, not a trace of it could be found. The ground holds nothing visible; only the documentary record insists that something was ever there.

The monument was captured on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1923, depicted as a roughly circular enclosure with a diameter of around twenty metres, set on a steep north-east facing slope above what is now pasture land. A rath of that size would have been modest but not unusual, likely enclosing a single farmstead and its associated activity in the early medieval centuries. At some point between its mapping and its inspection, the earthwork was levelled entirely, probably through agricultural improvement or land clearance. Denis Power compiled the record, which was uploaded in August 2011, by which point the site existed only as a georeferenced point and a note confirming its absence.

For anyone inclined to visit, the location sits within farmland on a steep slope, and the approach would require both landowner permission and a willingness to find nothing in particular. The value here is less in the visit than in what the record represents: a moment of routine archaeological surveying that catalogued a loss rather than a discovery. The 1923 OS map remains the clearest evidence that anything stood here, and consulting it alongside the modern landscape gives a better sense of what has quietly disappeared from the Irish countryside than the field itself can offer.
