A rath, as this type of monument is commonly known in Irish usage, is a roughly circular enclosure formed by one or more banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. These were the farmsteads of their age, domestic settlements where families lived, kept livestock, and conducted the ordinary business of rural life. The bank was not primarily a military fortification but a boundary, a marker of household territory and social standing.

Ballynabrennagh is a small townland in Kerry, and like so many of its neighbours it carries within its name and ground the long residue of early medieval settlement. Kerry as a whole preserves an unusually dense concentration of ringforts, a consequence of both the intensity of early Christian period farming across Munster and the relative survival of earthworks in areas that escaped later intensive cultivation. The rath at Ballynabrennagh belongs to this broader pattern, one node in a network of enclosed farmsteads that once organised the social and agricultural geography of the region. Without further excavation or detailed field survey attached to this specific site, the precise history of its occupation remains opaque, as is the case with the great majority of Irish ringforts, most of which have never been excavated and exist now as cropmarks, earthen banks, or slight rises in pasture fields.
