Ringfort (Rath), Ballynort, Co. Limerick

There is something fitting about a monument that cannot be found.

Somewhere on a limestone ridge in Ballynort, County Limerick, a ringfort quietly refuses to be visited. It appears on the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a neat, embanked circular enclosure roughly twenty metres across, drawn with the matter-of-fact confidence of a surveyor who had, presumably, actually seen it. Whether anyone has seen it since is another question.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape, a roughly circular area enclosed by an earthen bank and ditch, used during the early medieval period as a farmstead and for the protection of livestock. Thousands survive across the country, in varying states of preservation. The Ballynort example was recorded by Denis Power, whose site notes are brief and candid: the monument sits atop a limestone ridge, surrounded by dense scrub, and when he visited, it could not be located within the overgrowth of briars and bushes that had colonised the area. The map says it is there. The vegetation disagrees.

For anyone determined enough to look, the ridge itself is the starting point, though the dense scrub that defeated a trained recorder is unlikely to have thinned in the years since 2011. Late winter or very early spring, before the briars fully leaf out, would give the best chance of making out any trace of the enclosing bank in the undergrowth. What to look for is a low, curving earthwork, roughly following a circle about twenty metres in diameter, possibly visible as a slight rise or change in ground level rather than anything more dramatic. The limestone geology of this part of Limerick tends to produce thin soils and exposed rock, which can make earthworks harder to read even when the vegetation cooperates. This is a site for the patient and the observant, and the willingness to come away having found nothing at all is probably part of the bargain.
