Ringfort (Rath), Ballyshane, Co. Limerick

A circular earthwork sitting quietly in a Limerick field, this rath at Ballyshane is easy to walk past without quite registering what you are looking at.

A rath, or ringfort, is an enclosed farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century, built to protect a family's home and livestock behind an earthen bank and ditch. Thousands were constructed across the country, and many survive in some form, though few receive much attention. This one is modest in scale, roughly 28 metres across in both directions, and sits on a gentle slope facing north-northeast, which gives it a quiet, slightly tucked-away quality even in open pasture.

The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with notes uploaded in August 2011. Its enclosing bank still stands, reaching about 1.25 metres on the exterior face, with an interior height of only 0.35 metres, suggesting the ground level inside has dropped relative to the bank over the centuries. Outside the bank runs a fosse, the surrounding ditch that would have reinforced the enclosure's defensive function, measuring around 2.75 metres wide and 0.65 metres deep where it remains intact. That ditch has been partially filled in along the southwestern to west-northwestern arc, likely as a result of agricultural activity across the centuries. An entrance gap of just over 2 metres cuts across the scarped southern edge, and this is almost certainly the original point of access. An old field boundary visible on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map once skirted the northeastern to eastern side of the enclosure, but that boundary has since been removed from the landscape.

The rath sits in working pasture, so any visit depends on land access and the goodwill of the landowner. The interior slopes gently westward and is grassed over, but the margins and the bank itself are covered in overgrowth, which can make the enclosing earthwork harder to read clearly. The southern gap, however, is the most legible feature, and standing at that threshold gives a reasonable sense of the original layout. A field boundary still abuts the outer fosse edge at the northeast, a detail that rewards a careful walk around the perimeter.
