Ringfort (Rath), Ballyshane, Co. Wicklow

On a north-east-facing slope in County Wicklow, at the precise point where the gradient briefly eases, an oval earthen enclosure sits with a quiet purposefulness that most people passing through Ballyshane would never notice.

This is a rath, a type of ringfort that was the standard form of rural settlement across early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. The enclosing bank here measures roughly 44.5 metres along its north-west to south-east axis and 39.3 metres across, making it a modestly sized but reasonably complete example of the type.

The bank itself ranges from five to six metres wide and still stands between 0.3 and 1.9 metres high, best preserved on the north-eastern side where some of the original boulder revetment, the facing stones that would have held the earthwork in shape, remains in place. Unusually, there is no sign of a fosse, the encircling ditch that typically accompanies such banks and from which the upcast material was usually dug to build them. Whether that ditch was never cut here or has simply silted away without trace is unclear. Two gaps in the bank, one three metres wide to the north-east and one two metres wide to the south-east, offer a small puzzle: either could have served as the original entrance, and no obvious evidence favours one over the other. Inside, slightly off-centre toward the north-east, a low rectangular platform survives, measuring approximately four by six metres and rising just 0.4 metres above the surrounding ground. It is tentatively identified as the remains of a hut or house foundation, the kind of modest timber or wattle structure that the inhabitants of such an enclosure would have occupied during the early historic period.

The site occupies a position that makes reasonable sense of its placement: the break in the slope would have offered a degree of natural shelter while still allowing views down the north-east-facing hillside. The surviving boulder revetment on that same north-eastern arc suggests that whoever built and maintained the rath paid particular attention to that exposure, which is also the side facing outward toward the approach.
