Ringfort (Rath), Ballyteige, Co. Clare

A low grassy mound on a hilltop in County Clare sounds unremarkable until you start reading the ground.

What looks like a gentle rise in a pasture field is in fact a subcircular rath, one of the thousands of enclosed farmsteads built across Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. A rath is an earthen ringfort, typically the homestead of a farming family of some social standing, defined by one or more circular banks and ditches. This one at Ballyteige measures approximately 33 metres north to south and just over 30 metres east to west, making it a modest but reasonably well-preserved example of its type.

The enclosure is defined along its eastern, southern, and north-western arc by a low earthen bank and a flat-bottomed outer fosse, which is the ditch that runs alongside the bank. The bank itself stands nearly a metre high on its outer face, though only about fifteen centimetres above the interior ground level, which slopes gently down toward the south-east. More intriguing is the faint trace of a second outer bank visible on the eastern and south-south-eastern side, suggesting the site may once have been bivallate, that is, enclosed by two concentric rings of earthworks rather than one. That detail elevates it slightly in significance, since multiple enclosures are often associated with higher-status ringfort sites. A dip in the main bank at the east, with a correspondingly shallower section of fosse just outside it, is read as a possible causewayed entrance, the original gap left across the ditch to allow access into the enclosure. A modern house, driveway, and outbuilding now sit immediately to the north and north-east, pressing up against the monument, which gives the site a quietly incongruous quality, early medieval earthworks absorbed into an ordinary rural farmyard.
