This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead typically dating to the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They were not forts in any military sense but rather the defended homesteads of farming families, their circular banks and ditches marking territory, sheltering livestock, and signalling status. What makes this particular example worth attention is the detail of its construction: the outer face of the earthen bank has been revetted, that is, faced or reinforced with stone, a refinement that suggests some care and perhaps some means on the part of whoever built it.

The site is roughly circular, measuring 26 metres in diameter, and is defined by a tree-lined inner scarp, an intervening fosse (the ditch running between the inner and outer elements), and an outer bank with that stone-faced exterior. A second ringfort sits only 300 metres to the east, which is a notable proximity; paired or clustered ringforts are not uncommon in the Irish landscape and may reflect related households, successive occupation of the same land, or simply the density of early medieval settlement in productive agricultural areas. The condition of this rath is described as fair. A gap on the south-east side appears to be a modern intrusion rather than an original entrance, and a small quarry on the north-west has bitten into the outer bank, the kind of slow, practical damage that has altered countless such sites across the country over the centuries without quite erasing them.
