A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches thrown up around a central living area. This particular example is roughly 27 metres north to south and 29 metres east to west, its interior rising gently from the perimeter toward the centre in a shallow dome. A narrow entrance gap, just 1.8 metres wide, opens at the southern side, a detail that speaks to the deliberate, functional design of these structures rather than any accidental shaping of the land.

What gives this site an added layer of interest is its appearance on an estate map of the Barbavilla Demesne, held in the National Library of Ireland. On that map, the earthwork is annotated simply as 'Fort', suggesting that even the later inhabitants of the demesne recognised it as something ancient and distinct from the working landscape around it. The Barbavilla estate itself sits in relatively low-lying ground surrounded by gently undulating grassland, a setting that would have suited early medieval settlement well. Post-1700 field fences have since cut across the monument at its south-west, north-west, and north-east edges, intersecting the earthen bank and complicating its outline. A second ringfort lies some 280 metres to the west, a reminder that such sites rarely appear in isolation; the concentration of them across the Irish midlands reflects how densely this land was once farmed and settled in the early centuries of the first millennium.
