What gives it away is the geometry: a grass-covered ring roughly 24.5 metres in diameter, defined by an earthen bank four to five metres wide and half a metre high, with no visible fosse or entrance. The absence of a fosse, the external ditch that typically accompanies a rath, a form of early medieval enclosed farmstead usually surrounded by one or more earthen banks and ditches, is notable. Whether it was never dug, or has simply silted away to nothing over the centuries, is not clear.

What makes the site particularly unusual is its relationship with the landscape around it. The ringfort does not stand alone; it lies within the perimeter of an ecclesiastical enclosure, that is, the roughly circular or oval boundary that once defined the precinct of an early Irish church site. This kind of arrangement, a secular or domestic enclosure subsumed within, or sharing ground with, a religious one, points to a layered use of the same patch of land across generations. The church itself lies just to the south. The precise sequence of occupation, which came first and how the two features related to each other in use, remains the sort of question that the earthworks alone cannot answer.
