A modern field wall cuts clean through it at the north-west and south-east, the kind of pragmatic agricultural intrusion that has claimed countless such monuments across Ireland. And yet the rath persists, its interior raised noticeably above the level of the adjoining fields, a quality that tends to surprise people who encounter these structures for the first time.

A rath is an early medieval enclosure, typically dating from somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries, defined by one or more earthen banks and used as a farmstead or the residence of a family of some local standing. This one at Barragarraun measures approximately fifty metres on its longer north-west to south-east axis and around forty metres across, making it a reasonably substantial example of the type. The enclosing bank survives in fair condition, and a gap roughly one and a half metres wide is still visible at the north, possibly the original entrance point. The interior is now densely overgrown, which makes close inspection difficult but also, in its way, preserves what lies beneath from casual disturbance. Thousands of raths survive across Ireland, yet each one represents a specific household, a specific patch of land claimed and worked by people whose names are almost entirely lost to the record.
