This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement built primarily during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used as a farmstead by a family of some local standing. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is the layering of evidence still visible within it, one occupation folded inside another.

The outer enclosure measures twenty-seven metres in internal diameter, surrounded by a substantial earthen bank. A fosse, the external ditch that would originally have reinforced the bank as both a practical barrier and a marker of status, has been filled in over the centuries, though its outline can still be made out in the ground. The bank itself has been slightly altered and absorbed into the modern field boundary, a common fate for ringforts across Ireland as agricultural land was reorganised and hedgerows extended. The original entrance has been lost entirely. More unusual is what survives inside: a well-defined oval earthen bank, roughly ten metres by eight, enclosing what is interpreted as the remains of a house site. This inner feature suggests that the domestic focus of the settlement, the actual dwelling, sat within the larger enclosure as a distinct and bounded space. A modern trench running eastward from this inner area to the perimeter is the most recent intrusion, its purpose unrecorded but its path clearly cutting across the archaeology of both features.
