Ringfort (Rath), Brackary Beg, Co. Leitrim

On a drumlin slope above the Owenbeg River in County Leitrim, there is a circular patch of grass that was once the enclosed homestead of an early Irish farming family.

It is modest in every physical sense, and that modesty is precisely what makes it worth pausing over. The enclosure measures roughly 32.5 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, defined by an earthen bank, a rath, that barely rises above the surrounding ground. A rath is the earthen equivalent of the more familiar stone-built cashel, typically constructed during the early medieval period to enclose a farmstead and mark its social boundaries as much as its physical ones. Here, the bank is only around 15 centimetres high on the interior and 25 centimetres on the exterior, with a width of about 2.8 metres, the kind of dimensions that speak of gradual erosion over many centuries rather than any original insubstantiality.

Unusually, there is no visible fosse, the defensive ditch that typically runs outside the bank of a ringfort and from which the earth was dug to raise it. Its absence here may mean it was filled in over time, or that this particular enclosure was never intended as a defensive structure in any serious sense. The original entrance has not been identified. What the site does preserve, faintly, is its position in a wider agricultural landscape: it was once surrounded by field banks, now removed, which suggests that even after the ringfort fell out of use, the land around it continued to be managed and divided. The Owenbeg River runs roughly north to south through the valley below, with the stream lying about 50 metres to the south-east, close enough to have supplied water to whoever once lived within the enclosure.
