What makes this quietly puzzling is that it was once considered substantial enough to record: local accounts describe a raised circular area enclosed by two massive earthen banks with an intervening fosse, the fosse being the ditch dug between the banks as part of the defensive design. That is not a modest earthwork. Ringforts, also known as raths, were the most common form of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically used as farmsteads, and examples with double banks were generally associated with higher-status occupants. Whatever stood here, it was apparently considerable.

The Ordnance Survey maps of 1836 and 1876 both mark the spot simply as 'Fort', which tells us the feature was visible and notable enough to be recorded by surveyors working more than a century and a half ago. The site sits adjacent to a stream in upland country, which is a fairly typical setting for a rath, where access to water and a degree of natural elevation both had practical value. At some point after those maps were drawn, the land was planted with a dense conifer plantation, the kind of commercial forestry that spread across Irish uplands through much of the twentieth century. The trees appear to have swallowed the site entirely. When later researchers went to locate it, they could not.
