Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, with estimates suggesting around 40,000 once existed across the country. They were typically built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for families of some local standing. A raised bank of earth, sometimes reinforced with a ditch, defined the boundary of the enclosure and offered a degree of security for livestock and household alike. That so many survive at all is largely a matter of folk caution; a widespread belief that raths were inhabited by the fairy folk, the sí, discouraged farmers from levelling them even when agricultural convenience might otherwise have suggested it.
