Ringfort (Rath), Caheratrim, Co. Galway

What makes this Galway ringfort quietly compelling is not just its age but the degree to which it has survived.

On a west-facing slope of open grassland at Caheratrim, a circular earthwork roughly 35 metres across sits largely intact, its enclosing bank still legible in the landscape, its outer ditch, known as a fosse, still tracing the original defensive perimeter. At the south-western stretch of the bank, fragments of stone-facing remain visible on the outer edge, a detail that hints at the effort and organisation behind its original construction.

A rath is a type of ringfort, typically an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Most were the homes of farming families of some standing, surrounded by an earthen bank to pen livestock and signal status. At Caheratrim, the causewayed entrance gap at the south side preserves the original threshold of the enclosure, the point through which people, animals, and goods would have passed daily. More unusual is the souterrain in the north-eastern quadrant of the interior. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, dug beneath the living area of a ringfort, and used variously for cold storage, refuge, or concealment. Their presence in a rath generally suggests a household of some resource, one with goods worth protecting and the labour to build something that complex beneath the ground.
