Ringfort (Rath), Caherycoosaun, Co. Clare

What survives at Caherycoosaun is, by almost any measure, barely there.

A low earthen scarp, a shallow fosse, a round-topped bank, all of it settling gradually into marshy pasture near Kilshanny in County Clare. Rushes have swallowed the interior and are working their way across the northern scarp. Yet the site is measurable, mappable, and named, which sets it apart from the still more diminished monuments around it.

The antiquarian Thomas Johnson Westropp noted it in 1910 among a cluster of named cathairs in the Kilshanny area, describing the group as surviving only as "absolutely defaced remains, sometimes all trace gone." Cathair is the Irish term for a stone ringfort, and the presence of a name implies that local memory long outlasted the physical structure. The monument is a bivallate rath, meaning it was originally enclosed by two concentric banks and ditches rather than one, a form associated with higher-status early medieval settlement, roughly the period between the fifth and twelfth centuries. The outer enclosure measures approximately 54 metres north to south and 60 metres east to west; the inner area is considerably smaller, around 22 by 21 metres. A slight lowering of the scarp on the southern side may preserve the line of the original entrance. The site sits on a gentle rise above the surrounding wetland, about 130 metres south-west of the small stream that marks the townland boundary, and was still legible enough to be hachured and named on the 1916 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map. The interior rises slightly towards the centre, the only topographical hint of what was once a deliberately engineered enclosure.
