Ringfort (Rath), Camas, Co. Limerick

In a level Limerick pasture, a near-perfect circle of raised earth sits quietly in the grass, its geometry too deliberate to be natural and too modest to draw much attention.

This is a rath, the earthwork form of an Irish ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of them survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation, but each one repays a closer look, and the example at Camas is no exception to that rule.

The site consists of a circular enclosure roughly thirty metres in diameter, defined by an earthen bank that stands approximately 0.4 metres above the interior ground level and rises to around 0.8 metres on the outer face. Beyond the bank runs a fosse, the ditch that would originally have reinforced the defensive or boundary character of the enclosure. That fosse is two metres wide, though according to local information gathered at the time of survey it had been recently infilled, reducing its depth to just 0.2 metres. The interior is level, which is typical of raths used as farmstead enclosures, and is partially covered by dense overgrowth. The site was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to record in August 2011.

The overgrowth noted in the survey record is worth keeping in mind before visiting. The earthen bank, while low, is legible from ground level if you walk the perimeter, and the circular form becomes easier to read once you know what to look for. The partially infilled fosse may not be immediately obvious, but the slight depression beyond the bank gives it away on a dry day when the grass lies flat. Because the site sits in working pasture, access depends on the goodwill of the landowner and conditions underfoot will vary considerably with the season. Late summer or early autumn, when vegetation dies back, tends to offer the clearest view of the earthworks.
