Ringfort (Rath), Camas, Co. Limerick

A circle of earth in a flat Limerick field sounds like a modest thing, yet this rath at Camas encodes a way of life that lasted in Ireland for well over a thousand years.

What appears at first glance to be a slight rise in the pasture is, on closer inspection, a deliberately engineered boundary, one that once separated a family's domestic world from the wider landscape around it. Ringforts, known variously as raths or lios depending on local usage, were the standard form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a homestead with its outbuildings and occasionally a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage used for storage or refuge.

The earthwork here is circular, with a diameter of thirty-five metres, and is defined by an earthen bank with an internal height of around 0.7 metres and an external height of 1.3 metres. Beyond the bank runs a fosse, a shallow external ditch, measuring 1.2 metres wide and 0.4 metres deep, which would originally have reinforced the enclosure's defensible character. A gap of just over three metres breaks the bank at the north-west, most likely the original entrance. Both the bank and fosse are now heavily overgrown with bushes, which simultaneously obscures the form and, in a way, preserves it from casual disturbance. The interior is level ground under rough pasture. The site was recorded by Denis Power and uploaded to the national record in August 2011.

The rath sits in level pasture, which makes it relatively easy to read once you know what you are looking at. The overgrowth that cloaks the bank can make the circuit feel denser and more enclosed than the measurements alone suggest, and the slight depression of the fosse becomes clearer when you walk the outside perimeter slowly. The north-west gap is the most legible feature from ground level. There is no formal access or signage, so this is the sort of place that rewards those already comfortable with reading an Ordnance Survey map and with the ordinary courtesies of approaching farmland.
