Ringfort (Rath), Camcuill, Co. Sligo

What survives at Camcuill is subtle enough that a casual walker might cross it without registering anything more than a slight rise in the ground, a faint circular berm, and a shallow depression that was once a ditch.

Yet this is a rath, a type of ringfort that served as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period in Ireland, typically enclosed by one or more earthen banks with an external fosse, or ditch, to define and defend the space within. Here, the circular platform measures roughly 39 metres north to south and 37.5 metres east to west, sitting at the southern end of a low ridge just west of the Easky River in County Sligo. The bank that encircles it has been heavily worn down over the centuries, standing only between 0.2 and 0.5 metres in internal height and around 2.5 metres wide. On the eastern and southern sides, a low counterscarp bank, a secondary raised lip on the outer edge of the ditch, is still just about legible in the landscape.

Inside the enclosure, the archaeology becomes more layered and harder to read. Several short stretches of low banks survive within the interior, though their date and purpose remain uncertain. More distinct are two structural traces: a subrectangular hut site tucked against the inner face of the main bank at the north-northwest, and the remains of what appears to be a stone-built rectangular building in the southwest quadrant. The coexistence of these two features, one possibly an earlier curvilinear dwelling, the other a later rectilinear structure, hints at a site used and adapted across different periods, though without excavation the sequence remains speculative. The fosse on the southwestern side has been largely filled in, which may point to agricultural activity in more recent centuries gradually smoothing away what time had already begun to obscure.
