Ringfort (Rath), Carhooearagh, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Carhooearagh in north County Kerry sits a ringfort that researchers were flatly refused permission to visit.

That single fact, quietly noted in the archaeological record, gives this site an air of inaccessibility that most ancient monuments never acquire. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or liosanna, are the most common early medieval field monuments in Ireland, typically circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks, used as farmsteads from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. This one carries the Irish name Lios an Phóna, meaning the fort of the pound, a name that suggests a later use as an animal enclosure, a function to which many abandoned ringforts were quietly repurposed over the centuries.

The site appears on two separate Ordnance Survey maps, the editions of 1841 to 1842 and of 1939, each time as a circular enclosure, which at least confirms it was visible and recognisable across a century of surveying. The anglicised form of the name, Lissaphona, appears alongside the Irish on those maps. Beyond the cartographic record and the place name, documented detail is thin. What is known comes from C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, which catalogued monuments across the region but in this case could get no closer than the boundary of the property.

The refusal of access is, in its own way, a piece of historical information. It means the interior of the enclosure has not been formally examined in the modern era, and whatever earthworks, features, or finds might lie within remain unrecorded by archaeologists. The fort sits on private land, as the majority of Ireland's ringforts do, and landowners are under no obligation to permit entry. For this particular site, the combination of a suggestive place name, two centuries of cartographic continuity, and a closed gate may be all that the record ever yields.
