Ringforts
In the townland of Carrahan in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its earthen banks tracing a boundary that has endured for well over a thousand years.
Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. They served as farmsteads for families of varying social rank, and tens of thousands once existed across the island, though many have been lost to ploughing, development, and neglect. The one at Carrahan is among those that have slipped quietly past the record, its particular story still waiting to be properly documented.
